Food & Friends: Valentine’s Day Cookies

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is a holiday to share love and happiness…and, of course, lots of sugar! Although hearts, teddy bears, and flowers are popular gifts, what says “I love you” more than homemade sweets?  If you are in search of a cute treat, try some heart shaped cookies frosted with Valentine’s Day colors!  The Humble Foodie continues to try to recipes with friends.  Decorating is a great activity to do with others since each creation is unique.

My co-worker Claire and I decided to make cookies to bring to our students.  We used two different sized hearts to add some variety to our display.

Claire and I began by making delicious chocolate cookies from Annie’s Eats. We followed this recipe but took out the white chocolate chunks.  Since we used a heart shaped cookie cutter, we rolled out the dough on a surface.  Be sure to use plenty of flour.  We then stamped our cookies and cooked them.

Decorating Ingredients
Gel food coloring
Frosting
Sprinkles
Candy

When cooled, remove from a the heat and let cool.  While cooling, mix in gel food coloring to color frosting.  When decorating for a holiday, use some cute candies as accents.  We used colored M&Ms as well as candy hearts.

About Humble Foodie

While we both love to eat well, life as AmeriCorps volunteers doesn’t afford us the budget to try every new restaurant and type of cuisine. With many post-graduate expenses and limited financial resources, what’s a foodie to do? The answer is here, at The Humble Foodie. Instead of spending our hard-earned cash paying other people to cook for us, we’re spending as frugally as possible making delicious meals at home.
